Non-inductive Plasma Current Start-up by EC and RF Power in the TST-2 Spherical Tokamak

چکیده
Non-inductive plasma current start-up by EC and RF power was carried out on the TST-2 device. Low frequency RF (21 MHz) sustainment was demonstrated, and the obtained high βp spherical tokamak configuration has similar equilibrium values as the EC (2.45 GHz) sustained plasma. Equilibrium analysis revealed the detailed information on three discharge phases: (i) In the initial current formation phase, linearity between the plasma current and the stored energy was confirmed. (ii) In the current jump phase, the initial closed flux surfaces cause a change in the current increasing rate, but the stored energy does not show such a change. (iii) The current sustained plasma is characterised by the fraction of the current inside the last closed flux surface to the total current, and the fraction seems to determine the ratio of the plasma current to the external vertical field. MHD instabilities often terminate the RF sustained plasma, but no such phenomenon was observed in the EC sustained plasma.

Physics Study of EC-Excited Current Generation via Current Jump in the Compact Plasma-Wall-Interaction Experimental Device
Non-inductive current start-up experiments by using electron cyclotron heating and current drive (ECH/ECCD) technique has been conducted in the Compact Plasma-wall-interaction experimental Device (CPD), which is a small spherical tokamak device. By applying 8.2 GHz RF under steady external fields, plasma currents are generated and closed flux surface configurations are formed spontaneously. Two...

Recent experiments on the spherical tokamak have discovered the conditions to create a powerful plasma and ensure easy shaping and amplification of stability, high bootstrap current and confinement energy. The spherical tours (ST) fusion energy development path is complementary to the tokamak burning plasma experiment such as NSTX and higher toroidal beta regimes and improves the design of a po...
متن کاملParametric Decay Instability During High Harmonic Fast Wave Heating Experiments on the TST-2 Spherical Tokamak
A degradation of heating efficiency was observed during high-harmonic fast wave (HHFW) heating of spherical tokamak plasmas when parametric decay instability (PDI) occurred. Suppression of PDI is necessary to make HHFW a reliable heating and current drive tool in high β plasmas. In order to understand PDI, measurements were made using a radially movable electrostatic probe (ion saturation curre...

Magnetically confined plasma can be heated with high power microwave sources. In spherical torus the electron plasma frequency exeeds the electron cyclotron frequency (EC) and, as a consequence, electromagnetic waves at fundamental and low harmonic EC cannot propagate within the plasma. In contrast, electron Bernstein waves (EBWs) readily propagate in spherical torus plasma and are absorbed str...
